About IDMIF

The 21 st century has witnessed a remarkable growth in technological innovations. Access to high-speed internet and the affordability of smartphones has amplified the growth of Online Curated Content Publishers (OCCPs), often referred to as Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms in common parlance.

As viewing habits continue to shift from traditional mediums to OTT services, the rush towards internet-based delivery models is gaining further traction. The COVID crisis has also accelerated this transition. The lines of demarcation among technology giants, media
companies, content creators, distributors, aggregators and other stakeholders are rapidly getting blurred. Considering these tectonic shifts, the IBDF Board of Directors felt it was time to create an ecosystem of like-minded companies in the digital domain.

IBDF set up the Indian Digital Media Industry Foundation (IDMIF) in October 2021 as its subsidiary to expand its workspace in the digital domain.

The primary objectives of IDMIF are as under

Policy Advocacy

IDMIF endeavours to proactively create opportunities through strategic positioning and persuasive advocacy at the highest levels of government using its understanding of regulatory ecosystem and evolving needs of the businesses to present coherent solutions to problems that help shape conducive policies. The Foundation provides a platform for its members to ideate and collaborate on crafting policies and positions on legislative, regulatory and operational issues impacting the industry.

Content Self-Regulation

Set up a Self-Regulatory Body (SRB) under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 tasked with the responsibility of ensuring self-regulation of the non-news digital content. This SRB has been christened, Digital Media Content Regulatory Council (DMCRC).

IDMIF has 9 leading OTT platforms as its members with ~48% market share

With an objective to promote the growth of the digital media sector in India, IDMIF proactively engages all the relevant stakeholders to introduce policy/regulatory certainties and also strengthen content self-regulatory mechanism for member OTTs.
